The Queen is one of, if not the most powerful chess piece on the board. But her strength amounts to little more than a pawn if she is caught by the enemy.

"Jack?" Melissa yelled out in question after she heard a knock on the door. No answer came. The floor creaked when she knew someone else was in the house. "Jack?" Her voice shook as terror crept in asking her to play. Every stranger has a purpose and the game is just beginning so take a step in any direction, if you dare.

Melissa leaves her hometown of Tupelo to start anew in the city of Barrington escaping haunts of her childhood. Little did she know a run-in with Max, a police officer who doesn't play by any set of rules, would change her future. Her best friend, Alice vanishes and Max is the main suspect leaving Melissa insistent to find the truth. She teams up with her husband, John and a detective named Jack for an investigation to find out what has happened to Alice. As the game continues, promises disintegrate into a pile of deceit and lies. This leaves Melissa to question who she can trust as she desperately searches for answers because in reality, it's not a game at all.

Transcending is the act of rising above limitations of ordinary experience to pass through emotions that extend beyond our understanding, enabling one to emerge aware after great struggle.

Jack and Melissa find themselves in another challenging investigation of broken promises and lives manipulated by someone people should have been able to trust. They are hired to find the truth about Father Clayton and the communities beloved church. He welcomes them under the assumption Melissa needs help after losing her husband, John. Problems arise when she falls in love with the priest in question while she genuinely desires a normal life. She tries to push through her emotional problems as her whole world seems to come crashing down around her. The more she struggles to do the right thing, the deeper she digs her own grave as her past haunts and the future is unknown. There comes a time when she has to face facts and try to rise above it all.

My Review: Two quick reads, but full of on your toes reading.

Melissa moved to get away from her past. Things seem to be okay until Max enters the picture. Then her friend goes poof, the cop is being looked at for her friend going poof. So now it has all changed. Seems like she can't really live in peace.

So since things aren't really getting anywhere, she decided to get help and really find out whats going on. She needs the truth, the real story and to find Alice. Melissa is about to find out who she can and can't trust in this world.

Then in the next book, there still isn't a break for Melissa. She and Jack are now on another investigation. Again trust plays a big part. So Melissa is able to get closer because Clayton thinks she just needs some help after losing her husband. Oh but the little he knew...turns out Melissa is very good at this. Plus with Jack to help, they make a pretty awesome team!

The story was great and different. I like how chess was referenced, not something I really see referenced a lot. Its always good for something new and the writing was done very well. You will want to read more and see what Melissa and Jack are getting up to.
