Blondie Simpson lies near death after a violent incident. As her life flashes before her eyes, alternating between past and near-present, she relives the incidents that brought her here, starting a year ago.
Blondie recovers a memory of her mother Moneta assaulting her. She has Moneta charged with the crime, only to realize the memory is false. Blondie has her mother cleared, but Moneta's life is already ruined and she vanishes. Blondie determines to find her, bring her home, and fix the damage she caused. While searching for Moneta, Blondie accidentally discovers that years ago she was part of an underground group of mnemonic thieves who steal memories of the rich and powerful (or "paramours") for sale to the highest bidder.
Believing Moneta has returned to that life, Blondie follows her footsteps into a dangerous world that will bring them both to death's door.
There is more than one POV going back and forth from the past to current future. Which was done well, and I am one that is typically not a fan of multiple POV.
We start with Moneta just going about her day and she seems like a lovely person, so how could a memory show something so different. But the damage was already done, even after clearing her name.
Blondie is in school and things seem as normal as anyone in school could be, with the addition of memory theories. The kind where you can see and steal them. Okay, so maybe not so normal.
The begging of the book throws a lot of information and detail at you to start building the world and lead into current day between Blondie and Moneta.
For me, I liked the book and trying something different. For those who love this style of writing, it will be so worth the read. It's detailed, has the world building and the intrigue to keep you hooked.
