In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.

No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.

But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.

My Review: WOW! I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. This author's debut novel is amazing, refreshing, and different.

Jules is just living a simple life with her papa. Spending time out in the cold trying to catch a fish or anything she can bring to the market. Things have gotten tough lately, the rent is behind and papa is going to have to drain time to make up for it.

Then a chance to make life easier for the both of them comes along. Jules signs up to go to Everless to serve the Queen. There she can earn time faster and give it papa. However, she never expected things to change so drastically. She runs into the Gerlings, which she was told to stay away from ever since that night of the fire. But then papa shows up at Everless and things turn ugly. Shortly after she gets him out, she finds that he has passed. Then Jules will gain a higher position in Everless and become even closer to the queen and her daughter.

It's not until the ending that you're gripping the book tightly and hoping this story doesn't end. It picks up fast with Jules learning who she really is, who her parent's really were and the powers she holds. Not to mention, there is a certain Gerling, who isn't as bad as she remembered.

I cannot wait to dive into the next book already!
