Viktoria, a young and not particularly talented painter, comes across war vampires in the middle of war torn Croatia in 1992. She becomes obsessed with them. But socializing with vampires is dangerous. One of them attacks her and infects her with what she believes is AIDS. To save herself she leaves with Damian, the oldest of the vampires, on an adventure that will prolong her life forever ... or end it.
This is the first publication in English of well known Croatian vampire book "U anđeoskom liku zvijeri"
My Review: This may seem like it's just another vampire book, but its so much more! I loved this take and all the twists. Really made this something different.
Viktoria is a painter, who may or may not lack the skills to be super talented. But she's still a painter either way. She then happens to come across a vampire in the middle of a war. And now her latest obsession is them. Vampires in the middle of a war....maybe not the best time for anything vampire related. Maybe after the war, but either way, socializing with them is a big risk.
When Viktoria is attacked by a vampire, she starts to really freak out. Not just by the attack, but by what she may now have because of it. To stay safe and alive, she leaves with the oldest vampire. I guess she'll never be away from vampires now. Not if Damian is going with her. And hopefully he's good to his word. You never know with vampires.
This adventure wasn't going to be simple, it was a make it or break it type deal. In the end she will have a long life and live it. Or it will come to an end and who knows what could have happened if she made it.
But the details throughout were great and had me on the edge. I just had to know what was going on. I also liked the era this was all in, it was different and the author made it all blend really well. Overall a great book and I hope to read more by the author!
