Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.
When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.
To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?
Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.
My Review: Rachel is a fantastic author! This book is going on my top favorites of the year! Nina has gone through a lot and is doing a lot. Soul sucking demons had come through down and the population took a nose dive. So now thing have been taken over. So Nina has been looking over her sister. Its just them now. They both go to school. Nina and Mellie have been finding ways to make money and save it. Scrounge up food to eat and just trying to survive in this world.
Nina got up to deliver some clothes. Doing it like she has done for a while now. Everything was going well, until this giant ugly creature. It wanted her and it almost won. Nina wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Finn. But who was he really? Nina didn't really have much time to find out. She needed to get home. She needed to get ready for school and avoid being caught by the police. Cause here, everything is run by the church and one wrong move will cause your death. Things are so strict and what shouldn't be a sin, is now considered one.
So yeah. a lot is going on for Nina and her sister. But Mellie has let out a secret to Nina. This secret could cost her life. Next thing you know, Nina is finding out about Finn and who he is. What he does and the crew he hangs with. Which is good that they are on the same team. Because they are going to need each other.
Everything is fast paced. Intense ans beyond amazing. I can't wait to read the next book!
