Seventeen-year-old Florence Waverley is out of her depth. Literally. Kidnapped and taken below the waves to the mer world of Niemela, she is the ultimate gift for merman Prince Kiren: a human familiar tied to his side. But nothing is what it seems amid the beauty and danger of a dark ocean.
Every Niemelan has a role to play, from the mermaids who weave towers out of kelp to the warriors who fight sea monsters. But in trying to survive, Florence will end up in the middle of a war between the mer and the Darkness. A conflict that will push her between two brothers: Kiren, the charmer inexplicably drawn to both her and the monsters; and Rolan, the loner who has been pushing her away since the day they met. But in order to take a stand--and find out where she belongs--Florence will have to risk it all: her life, her heart... and her very soul.
My Review: Isn't the cover pretty? Simple, but it gets you to wanna know what its about. Well it has mermaids! I am sort of picky with mermaids. I like a good story that will grab me and make me want to read more of these books. I don't want some kind of Little Mermaid story.
Anyway....Florence is a lovely girl, though she doesn't do very much. She doesn't exactly fit in with the kids or in her home. I wanted her to fit in somewhere, and it sort of happens during a school trip to the beach. A merman is watching her ad finds her so exquisite that he kidnapped her.
She soon wakes up to learn she is living at Niemela, an underwater kingdom. She is about to learn why she was taken and brought there. Then she is told about everything, the mer people, the kingdom, the dangers, and maybe it will help with why she can somehow speak their language. Oh and she just happens to live in the water perfectly fine. Then two princes are brought into the story. You will get annoyed at these two guys, because you will end up figuring out their motives and just want to let Florence know about it. I feel for her in deciding. One is perfect for her and the other just has other plans. Oh and don't worry about a love triangle, its nothing crazy like you may read in some current YA books.
.......
So I liked Florence, a lot. She may not fit in on the surface, but she does better in the water. You watch her grow through the story. And by the end of it you are happy for her, and know she is doinng better in the water. I really hated how her mum didn't really do anything for her. Just one of those spoiled ladies. But I bet she won't really care if Florence just didn't show up for a while.
So I really loved the story. It was written so well and the details are right on point to make you picture the story as you read. She created this beautiful Niemela with such detail and history that I instantly fell for it. Ciye is such a strong writer. And now I can't wait to dive into the next books!
