SEAMS IN REALITY is the first book in the Seams in Reality Series. As a freshman in a suburban college near Chicago, Andrew leads an ordinary life until he meets Tonya, a strange woman with an even stranger secret. She is a master sorcerer, and he becomes one of her apprentices. Tonya's other apprentice is a resourceful young woman named Charley, and they aren't the only sorcerers in the world. The United States government has an entire bureau responsible for controlling them and the special seams which enable magic. Andrew's new life takes a dangerous turn when he meets Blake, a sorcerer who knew his grandfather. Blake's thirst for power leaves a trail of casualties, and in the end, only Andrew can stop him.
My Review: Seams in Reality has an interesting magic system set up. Wizards and witches can only use a majority of their spells when they are in close proximity to a seam. A seam is pretty much an invisible tear in reality, caused by multiple deaths in the area along with strong emotions of anger, hatred, fear, and grief, which pumps out energy that they can use to fuel their spells. A majority of the spells that can be used are mostly illusions and reading and invading another person’s mind. Master wizards and witches however when supplied with power from a seam can bend reality itself. While the idea for the magic system was original and interesting the book itself was not as good as I thought it would be. The action scenes in this book are far apart and extremely short. The book also started off with a few questions but it ended with double the questions from the beginning and a huge cliff hanger. This was a good book and I will read the next book just to see what happens but I felt that it could have been better.
